Animating Memory
This paper examines Out of Time, a short animated film I made in 2000. It explores the memories of an un-named man in a bath seen in a bath tub. Influenced by the films of Peter Greenaway, particularly Prospero’s Books (1991) and The Pillow Book (1996), Out of Time used a structural, rather than narrative-driven approach to reveal a moving collage of memory impressions from the life of an aging man. The edges of a memory are intangible, especially when the mind of the one who remembers is distorted or damaged. Memory loss, amnesia and déjà vu are events that can make someone feel like they are in several ‘tenses’ at once. They may experience the past, present and future simultaneously. The effect that these sensations have on how we perceive reality means that our understanding of that reality, is however, temporarily, disturbed. In Beck’s discussion on Rousseau, he expands on the idea that there is a negotiation between the present (in the form of the writer/subject), the past (a past subject) and the remembrance of the past (the text about the past subject and text that is produced by a historian).
